I recently bought two books that I love... no, three books.
1. All New Square-Food Gardening, by Mel Bartholomew
2. Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life and Education, by Grace Llewellyn (if you homeschool/unschool or want to, read it ! It's a must. I wish I had read it sooner)
3. Vegan Vittles, by Jo Stepaniak
Let's talk about that last one.

I have so far tried four recipes from it and love them all and would do them again, and again.
First, I tried Jo's Baked Seitan recipe and that inspired her to make her Gyros recipe. Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture because we had been working outside and were SO hungry. I thought it was fantastic. I admit I added more salt and more garlic to the Cucumber Sauce.
Next, I tried the Grilled Kale and Kraut Sandwiches but because I couldn't find kale, they became Grilled Swiss Chard and Kraut Sandwiches. OMG, OMG, OMG !!! From the first bite, that has become my favorite sandwich, E-V-E-R !
I know it sounds weird and that is especially why I wanted to try it LOL
You see, I also own her Ultimate Uncheese book and love her recipe for Pickle, Tahini and Tomato Sandwiches which also sound weird so I wasn't afraid to try another weird sounding sandwich, I couldn't wait ! By the way, the PLT's recipe is also in Vegan Vittle, like a number of favorite Uncheese recipes.
And then lastly, and now I have pictures to show, thank goodness :
The Better Burgers.

Here the patties are cooking and I want one just like that, now.

Here is the Better Burger, all dressed up, and I want one just like that, now.

And that is a close-up, as you can see, because I was fascinated by the look of the patties LOL
I thought the burgers were incredible the next day, perfect. I had tripled the recipe and wrapped some in foil and refrigerated them. We got to eat them cold for lunch. So good !
I have bookmarked eleven more pages in Vegan Vittles and I will be having a lot of fun in the near future. What will it be next ? Lentil and Walnut Pâté ? Radical Reubens ? Unstuffed Shells or Chickpeas à la King ? Can't wait !

The burgers look GREAT! I have her old Vegan Vittles, in fact, it was the first vegan cookbook I bought! Do you think it's worth buying the new version?
Hi Melody !
It's difficult to say because I'm not familiar with the first version LOL so I don't know what has been changed or added.
Hmm, I think you've motivated me to go out and buy that one :-) I've heard so many good things about the original...I"m guessing this new version isn't very different. Nice photos!
Those burgers look AMAZING!!!
My MIL has that 'square' gardening book and it seems like a really interesting concept. I wanted to try it, but I had a garden plot last year and we didn't get along, so I gave it away this year. Too bad. One day when I have a yard of my own, I will try it again.
Yum,yum,yum,yum,yum... I could just eat the burger off the page (um, computer screen)!
I've heard of this book and only stumbled across it recently at a local health food store. If I'd known about your rave review, I would have bought it then. Now, I think I might have to go back and get it. Thanks Gaia! It's always great to get opinions from someone who has actually cooked from the book. I'm guessing you like it!
thanks for the books reviews!
yoshi's island is the best game evvvvverrrrrr! check it out! love your vegan goodness! i'll add your bloggy to my bloggies list.
I saw this book just the other day and convinced myself not to buy it because I have far too many cookbooks. but now I'm quite sure I'll run out and buy it. tsk tsk
I love VV. It's a classic! I can see that many new vegan cookbooks draw their inspiration from it.
I could go for that burger right now--hey, it's lunch time!
Okay, you convinced me, I'm buying Vegan Vittles (just for the burger recipe alone)!
Oh wow- just the names of the recipes you made are making me go crazy with hunger! Kale and kraut?? Gyros with cucumber sauce????? Why, oh why have I ignored this book for so long? I think because it's such a classic, I've just taken it for granted. Thank you for opening my eyes.
Looks amazing! I've never tried the Better Burgers myself, but the Garbanzo Oat Burgers are a favourite. Also Chickpeas à la King, and Cauliflower Paprikash (which I was actually thinking of making any day now, just need to get some mushrooms...) are highly recommended!
That is one fabulous looking burger! Now I guess there's another cookbook I need...
Love Jo's books probably because they were amongst the first Vegan books I ever bought.
i hear tons of good about Vegan Vittles but have yet to see it in the bookstores. i will need to look harder.
i wish i could eat one of those better burgers right now!

Hi Gaia! Vegan Vittles is on my list of "wants" but you've almost got me convinced to move it to the list of "needs." Everything sounds so delicious and those Better Burgers look scrumptious. I've already eaten dinner but your pictures have me hungry again. I'm glad to hear you're doing well. Looks like you've been cooking up a storm. The picture of your strawberry cake is gorgeous. Too bad the taste wasn't quite right. I hope you post your tweaked recipe soon. Happy belated birthday!!!
Gaia! :) :)
Thanks for the book links! I already ordered the Teenage Liberation one and cannot wait!!!! Looks like an awesome one for us.
yum! Vegan Vittles has some very different recipes in there that sound so good! All the ones you made sound (and look) awesome. I want that kale sandwich!
I vote for radical reubens! I can't wait to see all that you make!!
Gaia: wow that is so bad that you cant have soy cream cheese that, is a new product here and i love it , im just hoping that the store sell it a lot and dont take it out as always happens around here.

've had serious cravings as of late for all things veg patty/burger. yum!
Thanks for the cookbook review, I'll be on the look for Vegan Vittles. The burger looks perfect, and I bet they were great cold the next day -- that's what we do for road trips.
