Did any of you notice that I had wished you a Happy 2006 ? Please know that although I wish 2006 was a great year for you, my wishes are now for 2007 and I hope it’s an even better year ! LOL
Today, I will pass on a recipe I found on the net somewhere while looking for something else entirely. I had to immediately try it because I love chickpeas and almost anything lemon flavored. I thought it was only ok at the time and so I added more stuff to it and it still might change in the future. If you make it and change it for the better, please do share !
But I find it pretty good when you are looking for an out of the ordinary humus and I loved the pita sandwich I made with it.

“To Your Taste” Lemony Chickpea Hummus
Re-imagined by Gaia from Rosie Schwartz’ recipe found on Dr. Weil’s website (although I didn’t find it there :p)
• 1 garlic clove
• 3 Tbsp of lemon juice (or more, to taste)
• 2 to 3 rounded Tbsp of Vegenaise (depending on desired texture, dip or filling)
• 2 Tbsp of fresh parsley (or more, to taste)
• ½ rounded tsp of rosemary
• 19 oz cooked chickpeas, rinced and drained
• 1 tsp of Umeboshi Plum vinegar
• salt and pepper
Blend all ingredients in a food processor with metal blade attachment. Adjust vegenaise to taste.
Adjust everything, to taste. :p
Changing subject, have you noticed a weird smell and taste to red bell peppers lately ? I swear the one I bought at 4.99$ CAN/pound this week tasted like moth balls. No kidding !
And they usually smell horrible right there in the store. This time it started smelling bad when it got here or else I would have kept my money. I just hate having to through away food and even more when I paid top dollar for it. And I hate to not have red pepper around but what else am I going to do ? Eat Moth Balls Peppers ? I think not !
Anyway, I’d love to have your input on this. Is this just a problem in Quebec ??

I love chickpeas too and that hummus recipe and your sandwich look so great!
I haven't even picked up a red pepper because they are so crazy expensive. I wouldn't be surprised if they were being stored with mothballs!
Hi Gaia! I love hummus and lemon too... especially together! Lol! Your wrap looks great. I usually make Dreena's Creamy Hummus from Vive le Vegan. Last night, I made some and realized I had no lemon. :( It was a little blah.
Anyhow - the moth ball peppers are an odd thing. I don't think I've ever smelled peppers like that before! lol! Please don't get sick. The description of their smell reminds me of my Aunt Gertrude's attic. ;)
Diann, that would certainly explain a lot !
Candi, LOL !
Kiss that Ol'Gertrude for me ! :p
I haven't had red pepper in a few weeks, but last I remember, they smelled normal. And 4.99/lb? Where are they being imported from? I do without until they go on sale, which can be a long time sometimes!
You are a true wrap star.
That's so funny, I totally didn't notice you said 2006 instead of 2007- for the first weeks of any new year, I make that same mistake myself!
Your hummus sounds and looks good to me. I bet the lemon would be complimented by some dill...
And I haven't smelled anything weird on my red bellpeppers except the high price. Especially since I know I should only buy organic peppers due to their high pesticide content, I know it would really sting to have to buy one and then throw it out! What's up with that...?
here they smeel normal!
thanks for the recipe!
yyyeeeaaahhh! :) Just came by to look at the hummus wrap again. :) I have lots of food in the house, but it seems there is nothing to eat but junk. I have to go buy some fruits and veggies today! :) And some chickpeas for this hummus! :)
No problem with the red bell peppers here in wisconsin, except that it's January and they're either tiny or shipped from yonder (I'll take the small ones over semi-truck ones). What a lovely picture- makes me want hummus!
mmm, if i could get my hands on some Umeboshi Plum vinegar, i'd try that real quick :)
i'll have to copy down the recipe in case i come across some!
I just had to come back and tell you that when I went to the grocery store yesterday, I actually picked up a red pepper and sniffed it! It seemed okay, but I didn't buy it.
Lemony hummus! Sounds really good. Looks really good in your wrap!
Red peppers around here are approx. $3.99/lb and I really don't want to spend that much unless absolutely necessary, so I've skipped buying them. I will keep my nose open though next time I go shopping.
good job, congrats..
That hummus wrap looks like its from a restaurant!
what a lovely photograph. thanks for sharing the recipe too! rosemary makes everything happy!
Emphatically yes! I'm actually in the middle of Googling "moth balls" and red peppers to figure out the mystery of why some red bell peppers I buy taste so strongly of mothballs. I've had the experience in BC many times and just had a mothball-flavoured pepper in Alberta (the pepper may have come from BC). My theory is it may be a gas or preservative or some kind, but this is just a guess. I haven't found any information yet. The taste isn't in all red peppers I buy, but when it's there, it's there! It doesn't taste natural, that's for sure. - Elysia
I don't like to sound dramatic but this RED PEPPER SMELL thing is really creepy because we have found it in 3 different foods - exactly the same (very unappetising) smell: red peppers yes (we thought they were simply overripe), Aunt Bessie's frozen chips - I took it up with the company and I was basically ignored despite my claiming that I thought I had been poisoned (the smell stayed in my mouth for almost a day), and TODAY satsumas ... on the peel but it also penetrated through to some of the segments. This must be happening all over the world but to most people it is just so bizarre that they must think they are the only ones affected and hence nobody's doing anything about it. I think it is some sort of pesticide that won't wash off. or maybe rat poison being sprayed on while in transit?!! I am very alarmed and very angry!
My produce was bought from TESCO and SAINSBURY here in the UK - smell noticed over the last 8 months (estimated)
We have to do something - this stuff might be carcenogenic - God Knows it just smells so unnatural.

came here googling for red peppers and moth balls; finding these fairly often in ontario, canada
in case anyone (preferably with an organic chemistry background, i suppose) has some more time to look into the mothball issue, and because this may be very useful in general:
greenbook.net (requires registration) let's you search for (US-registered) pesticides by the crop they're used on; one can then typically google on the active ingredient to find the chemical formula; so looking through the results for sweet peppers comes up with names like indoxacarb, axoxystrobin, mefenoxam, etc, etc; all we'd need then is an organic chemist to compare the chemical formulas to naphthalene or 1,4-Dichlorobenzene to tell us if it's plausible that one of these pesticides is causing our peppers to taste like mothballs; bad-taste issues aside, you can then look at the toxicity reported in the MSDS to decide whether you still want to eat them
phew... that's my internet research for the day
I was just googling red peppers and moth balls and found this posting. There's definitely a mothball smell and taste on some red bell peppers. If it isn't toxic, it sure tastes like it. I'm in NY and threw out a pepper tonight that was from Mexico.
I've just discovered red peppers that stink like mothballs in my fridge in the UK, gutted as I can't put them in my salad now an dthey've stunk up the rest of the peppers they were in a bag with! Googling 'red peppers smell like mothballs only came up with this blog though!
I live in Florida and a red bell pepper I just cut up and tasted also had mothball taste. I googled this, as well, and came up with this site. I have only experienced this with red bell peppers. This surely cannot be healthy. Very skeptical of buying red bell peppers, may just grow our own!
Should I EAT the red pepper that smells like moth balls???
Should I feed it to my children??? YUCK!
I just washed some peppers from Whole Foods that smell terrible! They smell like moth balls, the smell of toxicity. I know that bell peppers are rated very high in pesticides due to their thin skin, so I think the smell is from chemicals. I think I'll go take them back to the store. What a waste of time, but I am so glad I found others posting about this problem, thanks!
Not that this is fresh anymore, but a week ago I bought a bag of Sunset Brand "Ancient Sweets." A crazy price at $4 for 2 lbs. My normal grocery didnt have any reds, so I went somewhere else as I needed it for a recipe. The produce was grown in Nicaragua, but distributed out of Ontario.
At first I could not decipher the peculiar flavor, I kept saying manure to my wife. But tonight, having half a bag left I cut them up and tasted again. Boom! Mothballs. My grandmother used to litter her house with them and all the candy we got from her tasted like mothballs! She is 96, so much for it poisoning her, but who wants peppers that taste like mothballs!
